Amid the rows of identical houses on streets that curve, wind, intersect, and dead end on miscellaneous cul de sacs, are the Americans who have seemingly attained their perfect life in the suburbs. This life, one with front and back yards, free and ample parking, and short drives to big box stores, is purported to hold the promise of happiness for many. But are these spaces designed to make us feel happy, safe, and fulfilled?
Inspiration for architecture thesis projects may stem from various sources including academic passions and personal connections. Such was the case for South Carolina native Phillip Smith’s graduate thesis project, a counterproposal for the design of the International African American Museum (IAAM) located in Charleston, South Carolina.
First year architecture education provides foundational techniques that allow students, who enter architecture school with a range of artistic skill levels, to develop the sketching and watercolor skills that are essential to Notre Dame’s approach to design. Professor Giuseppe Mazzone, who teaches the first semester studio, is charged with helping students develop those skills.
Choosing to embark on an alternative career path can be daunting, but the choice to pursue an unique path is often rewarding in unexpected ways. Such is the case with Sara Bega ‘14, who decided to take a position as Town Architect in Las Catalinas, Costa Rica after completing her Bachelor of Architecture.
“It’s like creating smiles all day long,” Bill Bates ‘75 says reflecting on his life as the Vice President of Real Estate at Eat’n Park Hospitality Group where he manages the restaurant growth division. He has built a stellar architecture and corporate real estate career through his deep belief in community engagement and his commitment to give back to the communities who have given so bountifully to him. The AIA recently recognized his leadership and commitment to the profession when its membership elected him national President of the AIA.
